ABOUT THE DESIGNER

Helena Geiger

Helena was born in Sydney. Her Indigenous heritage is Gumbayngirr from Northern NSW and her father’s background is Austrian.   As a contemporary visual artist, she specializes in Batik and hand-dyed textiles. Helena’s artwork has been exhibited widely in Australia and is in collections both here and abroad.   Making a move a few years ago from Sydney to enjoy a creative more peaceful lifestyle on the NSW south coast, she now works full time from her studio in Jervis Bay.    Immersing herself in this pristine environment, with Booderee National park on her doorstep, she records the textures and markings in the landscape, photographing & sketching patterns found on scribbly bark, weathered sandstone, ochre, rocks, moss, seaweed and shells.   These are the details that inspire her work, it is an evolving art practice, which is never really mastered and can be quite challenging at times. “What I love about the Batik process is that every step informs the next, it develops and changes direction with every color and layer of wax that is applied”. Each Batik produced is unique and cannot be duplicated.   Helena’s work in the furnishing textile trade and the sublimation fabric printing industry these past 20 years, inspired her to complement her artistic side by moving into printed textiles. This collection of designs portrait imagery of our surroundings, to create awareness of our beautiful environment, diverse cultures, respecting & looking after the land, and our place in it.
